Gabriella Levine is an interactive artist and open source hardware designer interested in the relationship between technology and ecology. She studied biology and Piano at Cornell University and Oberlin College. She worked doing Cancer Research at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, before abandoning the lab for the outdoors to become a wild fire fighter in Oregon. Currently, she attends ITP at NYU, creating sculptural and robotic works that mimic environmental phenomena and animal behavior, such as oil-collecting robotic sailboats called Protei.
Protei is an international project for the design of a fleet of open source, robotic, unmanned sailboats. The boats started out as oil collecting drones, which would drag a long, oil-absorbent boom, but currently, Protei is expanding to be a platform for marine sensing and ocean cleaning applications.
